William (Billy) Franklin Foster

William Franklin Foster, Seaman 1st Class, died when the Heintzelman was destroyed.  He enlisted at 17, and joined the Navy shortly after his 18th birthday.

Three years prior to the Heintzelman tragedy, his family suffered another great family tragedy. Billy's little Brother Jimmy had drowned in an Illinois river.

To this day, Billy's sister Virginia won't go in water & doesn't know how to swim. Virginia also served during WWII in VA working as a payroll clerk in the WAC.
